Walking our sustainability talk
Construction isn’t an industry known for its sustainability. With 40% of U.S. landfills being filled with building waste and debris, it’s a problem the world can no longer turn a blind eye to1. At DIRTT, we work to change that by Doing It Right This Time. What we’re doing right is giving Clients the power to design and build interior spaces that defy convention, maximize flexibility and significantly minimize impact on the environment.
Here are five ways we’re leading the way in sustainable construction year-round:
1: Designed for disassembly
What does this mean? Think the LEGO® you played with growing up. It’s a similar approach. Every component of DIRTT solutions can be disassembled and individually managed. This is significant for two reasons: First, it allows interiors to be adaptable. As organizations change, their spaces can be reconfigured to accommodate. This means breaking the cycle of tearing out drywall and construction debris only to start from scratch. Secondly, it means materials can be reused and recycled at the end of their life instead of dumped in a landfill.
2: Innovation through technology
Forget physical mockups! At DIRTT, we ditch the material and energy waste that comes with mockups by going virtual. Our ICE® software allows our clients to walk through and experience their space in virtual reality – which we call ICEreality™ – before construction begins. Since physical mock-ups don’t typically end up as part of the finished design and are usually disposed of, we’re doing our part for the planet.
3: Plastic waste reduction
Nearly 80% of plastic ends up in landfills or natural environments2. At DIRTT, we think that’s 80% too much. As a result, we’ve banned disposable plastic water bottles, straws and other food-related single-use plastics at our facilities. Our solution? DIRTT factories and Green Learning Centers are stocked with reusable dishware and compostable options.
We partnered with Climate Earth to complete a full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our assemblies, from the extraction of raw materials to product end of life. We don’t mean to toot our own horn, but this initiative meant we were the first prefab manufacturer and construction company to move the industry towards a greater level of transparency.
5: Supply chain management
When it comes to forming partnerships, we choose like-minded suppliers. We gravitate toward organizations who share strict requirements around material specifications, product tolerances and quality of working conditions. We also focus on a greater use of regionally-sourced materials since it both benefits local economies and reduces the transportation footprint. A win-win!
Those are just some of the ways we work to limit our impact and help our clients have more sustainable projects and spaces for the long term. For a closer look at DIRTT’s sustainability initiatives, check out our full sustainably story.
